Keeping folders closed when dragging.

Can't quite produce proper question for this problem to find answer in historical posts. I hope my description below is understandable.

When dragging folders within a list of folders (Mail mailboxes, Photos sidebar folders, Safari bookmarks folders, etc.) to a reorganized position, how do I keep the folder just above that drop position from opening up to accept the dragged folder? That reaction complicates my reorganization.

Then I have to drag it out of that incorrect folder, and somehow make it stay separate, but right below that offending folder.
