I'm on a metered ISP and something started eating up my time in junks. Last month I ran out of time on the 17th. The ISP suggested that there might be apps running in the background that we didn't need or use. Both users in our home are over 60 years old and we don't watch movies, videos or do any serious gaming. It's strange because for 4 years we survived on 12GB monthly plan, but when we upgraded to 30GB, without any changes in equipment or usage our time started disappearing.

I just finished talking to a chat representative and she has sent me some suggestions. I continue to try to find the "leak" in my time bucket.

You don't mention which phone you own, but if it's any phone other than iPhone X, double tap your home button to bring up the most recently used apps. You can then swipe them upward to take them out of the recents list and ensure they are fully closed. CAnn1947 is correct in the comment that iOS manages apps to the level that once not being actively used, they are suspended and should not be using any data.

If you're referring to your use of WiFi data (as opposed to cellular data) and this is your first iPhone, the most likely culprit is iCloud backup. This is designed to back up the contents of your phone on a daily basis to the cloud whenever it is in standby and connected to power and a WiFi network.

If you have a limited amount of data permitted by your ISP, you may want to turn off iCloud backups and back up to your computer using iTunes instead.
