Thumb drive issue
I downloaded High Sierra 10.13.1 to my MacBook Air and now I can't use a thumb drive that was usable before the download.

Strongly suggested
1 - copy all data from the USB drive to a safe location (another storage device)
2 - with offending USB attached to MBA - use Disk Utility to reformat the USB to HFS+ (Journaled) and GUID
3 - add to USB a simple text file for testing

What format was the USB originally formatted as - - HFS+, APFS, Ext32, NTFS ? From what version of macOS was it formatted from Sierra, High Sierra, Windows, Linux?
Next, attach USB drive >> Disk Utilities. Does the drive appear in Disk Utilities? If it does, look along the top of DU menu bar and see if you can manually Mount the USB. If you can Mount the drive it should appear on Desktop, then try getting the info, data from the drive and move to Desktop (for now)
Do you access to a Windows PC for off loading? I had the same issue.
I agree the usb drive should be reformatted, but I can't get to the data because the drive won't open.
