iphone 5 unresponsive screen

My Iphone 5 screen is intermittently unresponsive. It seems to get progressively worse. It was completely fixed when I completely restored the phone to its original factory settings. It worked well for a month. Then the screen would go unresponsive briefly, then work again after pressing the top button and sleeping the phone. Now that doesn't even work and the phone goes unresponsive for longer periods of time. Once it even started open apps on its own as if a ghost was using it.

I doubt this is a hardware issue because the factory reset seemed to fix the issue completely for a month or so. The screen physically seems fine, never dropped. I just don't want to have to wipe the phone every month to make it work.
