Nothing more is supposed to happen.
With the keyboard connected, fold the smart keyboard to the type position, and place the iPad in the groove above the number keys.
Then just open an app that uses a keyboard and select an area to type in, and start typing.

What are you expecting to happen?
There will be no notification or warning that a keyboard is connected if that's what you are expecting.
What model does your iPad have in Settings->General->About?
I was expecting the Apple Intelligent Keyboard and cover to seamlessly connect with my iPad Pro 12.9”, newest versión purchased one week ago. It did initially connect, now it won’t.
I have cleaned the contacts, etc. Yes, the keyboard icon comes up on the onscreen keyboard but it doesn’t provide access to the “Intelligent Keyboard”. Yes, I am trying to use it in the Typing position.
Try rebooting / restarting the iPad, and then connect the keyboard again.
I did but there was no joy. Still no keyboard connection.
