external disk's in steady activity - how to see source of activity?

Which Sierra on-board tools is suitable to track back the cause of external disk's steady-activity (led blinking, disk working noises)? All user programs are shutdown, disk excluded from Spothlight indexing, no virtual machine running, nor any external disk mounted. Disks Encryption/Decryption FileVault2 actually should be completed. So me looks for Mac stock means to track back the source of activities.

Thanks for information and your proposals.

It's hard for me to see how can Disk Utility help here. Me can find there utilities for management of disk's static properties. Regarding using Console in this case, which entries are worth to look at?

You are welcome. In Console, do you see any entries with the disk's name. If nothing else is being done with the computer, most activity should be the drive.
