Wait. That is normal as long as the installation continues. It will continue slowly but that number should drop given some time. If it doesn't and you'd like to try something more rather than take a trip to the Apple Store.
Possible Fixes for El Capitan or Later
You should try each, one at a time, then test to see if the problem is fixed before going on to the next.
Be sure to backup your files before proceeding if possible.
- Select Disk Utility from the Utility Menu and click on Continue button.
- When Disk Utility loads select the drive (out-dented entry) from the Device list.
- Click on the Erase icon in Disk Utility's toolbar. A panel will drop down.
- Set the Format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)
- Click on the Apply button, then wait for the Done button to activate and click on it.
- Quit Disk Utility and return to the Utility Menu.
- Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
If you decide the installation will never finish, force the MacBook to shut down by holding its power button for a long time (at least ten seconds or so). It may restart with the upgrade completely finished. Or, it might not restart at all. In any event you can't wait forever, so it's not as though you have much choice. Give it a few hours, at least.
Since it's new, consider contacting Apple: Contact Support. They'll fix whatever is wrong and it won't cost you anything but time.
