Can an Airport Extreme be used as a WiFi extender for an Airport Express base station?

I'd like to connect an Airport Express to my modem then use an Airport Extreme as a WiFi extender in another room. I know an Airport Express can be used as an extender for an Airport Extreme base station, but can the opposite be done?

Yes, it can. But....the network performance would improve if you make the AirPort Extreme the "main" router and use the AirPort Express as the extender.

Even better would be to connect the extender back to the main AirPort using a wired Ethernet cable connection, since you will lose about half of the potential network speed when the AirPorts are set up to extend using only wireless.
