how can i bypass activation lock on my ipad 2? i got it from a friend and they don't know their apple id password and cant recover it. can i bypass this and set it up for my use?

If you purchased the device second-hand, then it is useless without the Apple ID and password to which it is locked. If you don't have it, can't remember it or cannot get it, then the device is useless to you. Try to get your money refunded, if you can, or take it to an Apple store for an exchange provided they will help you. No, you cannot. The only way to remove the Activation Lock is for your friend to recover their Apple ID and remove the Activation Lock. Why is it that they cannot recover their Apple ID? If they are the original purchaser of the iPad, they can bring it, their ID and the original purchase receipt to a physical Apple Store and ask for help. This is only if they are the first and original purchaser.
