I am not able to retrieve my voicemail. Usually I can retrieve the first voice message, but after that I get the same voice message regardless of who has left a message, i.e. the same voice message is heard on all other phone numbers that have left different messages.

You can try a forced restart.
Press and quickly release the Volume Up button. Press and quickly release the Volume Down button. Then, press and hold the Side button until you see the Apple logo.
Voicemail is a carrier function and if the above does not help, contact the carrier for assistance in resetting your voicemail service.
