My iMac has Poor Performance since High Sierra and I don't know why

Hi,

Ever since my update to High Sierra, my iMac has been sluggish and it has randomly crashed twice or so recently. My internet was a bit...spotty...but I've taken some steps to fix that and it seems to be better...though I'm not sure. Anyhow, my computer is a bit questionable and I'm not sure why. I ran Entrecheck and I'm not seeing any big red flags in the details of the report (though I don't have experience interpreting Entrecheck reports...so maybe there is something I'm missing). All I'm seeing is that report telling me that my Performance is Poor.

Are there any of you all with experience with Entrecheck reports who might be able to interpret this report and tell me if you are seeing anything that might be causing me this trouble?

Thanks in advance!

So I reloaded in safe mode...which took forever to load. It was sluggish, but that is safe mode. I ran EntreCheck while in SafeMode....It looked the same but various things you'd expect were left unloaded. The EntreCheck Performance entry went from Poor to Below Average. So technically it is better? But it is still below average and I can't really see any reason why that might be.

Dec 13, 2017 8:26 PM in response to ThunderingSilence

If it's just as sluggish in Safe Mode as it is normally, have Apple evaluate it for a hardware fault. The usual cause is a failed hard disk drive.

Contact Support

That Mac has a lot of junk software installed. Using non-Apple "anti-virus" and "cleaning" junk will result in poor performance. At a minimum, get rid of "SecureMac, "MacScan", "MacUpdate Desktop", "Sophos", and "Synium CleanApp". Follow their respective instructions. You can see for yourself how they burden that Mac's CPU while consuming energy needlessly. Confirm it by using Activity Monitor's corresponding functions.

Dec 13, 2017 8:27 PM in response to trooper6

Booting Safe Mode takes a long time because it performs a cursory file integrity check along with some other housekeeping tasks, but once it boots its performance should not be poor. It's just inconvenient to use in that mode for any length of time due to the lack of hardware graphics acceleration, resulting in screen image "tearing". Certain features (such as audio I/O) may not work properly or at all in Safe Mode.

You may be able to confirm hard disk failure by installing macOS on an external drive, and booting from it using Startup Manager (hold an option key while you start your Mac).
