Photos look like night vision images

Photos taken with my iPhone 5S suddenly started coming out looking like an image seen through night vision goggles — see attached image. When it started happening the phone had iOS 10.something.

So I reluctantly upgraded to iOS 11 (concerned that it would slow my phone down too much) which had just came out when the problem happened. The upgrade did indeed slow my phone down but it also fixed my image troubles... briefly. It worked correctly for three photos, then the fourth one started coming out green again. So now I had very slow phone AND green photos.

So I downgraded back to iOS 10 and the same thing happened. The first few photos were fine, then it was back to the exact same green photo issue.

Because the OS change would temporarily help I was assuming it was a software issue. But the fact that it keeps coming back, now makes me think that there is actually a hardware problem with the camera.

Thoughts?

Interesting... the green is with photos only (square and regular format) but not with videos — they look 100% normal.

Then it can't be dirt on the lens or similar. Is perhaps one of the filters enabled? When you click the filter button in the upper right corner, are the filters set to "Normal"? The filters are the only effects, that apply only to photos and not videos.

Also when I transfer to my MacBook Pro, the images remain green.

Are you transferring by my Photo Stream or USB connection? Have you tried "Revert to Original" in Photos?

Are only photos taken with the iPhone looking green? Does it effect the videos as well?

Do photos turn green, when you download photos to the iPhone?

If you share a green photo to a differnet device (by mail, by air drop, by My Photo stream) does it display o.k on the other device, or does it arrive green?

It would help to narrow down the problem, if it is caused by the hardware (the lens or the chip), the camera.app or the Photos.app.

Hi Léonie,

The images are green right away. As I'm composing my shot the screen looks fine. But once I take the shot it is green right away. When you are still in the camera app, you get a preview of the last shot you took in the lower left of your screen. When that preview show up... it's green. Also when I transfer to my MacBook Pro, the images remain green.

So I guess this means that it might not be hardware... but it also doesn't seem like it could possibly be software, where I went back and forth a few times between iOS 10 and 11. And at least one or two of those times was with a complete wipe of the phone — back to factory settings. So it is not a legacy problem that remains because the os was simply updated as opposed to a full clean install.

Any other thoughts?
