iPhone 8 stuck on logo screen after trying to update iOS

After connecting my iPhone 8 plus to my iMac, I was prompted for an iOS update, which I agreed to. I then got this message:

User uploaded file

I tried to update several times, then got a message stating that the update was not going to work, and that I had to restore to factory settings. Then I got this message:

User uploaded file

The phone then rebooted itself, and is now locked on the Apple logo screen, with a white bar beneath it. None of the techniques for a soft or hard restart are working. I have tried holding the sleep (side) button for up to 30 seconds with and without it being connected to the iMac.

The phone is one month old. Any ideas?

Update:

The problem turned out to be a third-party USB-lightning cable. The Apple cables are too short and too fragile, so I was using a braided lightning cable from Amazon. I disconnected the phone from the cable, hard-restarted using the Volume Up, Volume Down, then side button.

Connected it to the iMac via an actual Apple cable, and it came back to life.
