TextEdit export text as audio not working

Since one of the updates this week, the service that appears in TextEdit that allows me to turn a text file to audio and export it to iTunes doesn't seem to be working. I've tried to approach this several ways, including making automator do it. No luck. It just puts the spinning cog in the tool bar and never finishes (or even starts as near as I can tell.) Is this a known issue? Is there a work around?
