why has my Dock quit automatically hiding?

I've always had my Dock preference checked to hide and appear automatically but this morning it is stationary opened???

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.1)

Does this behavior persist after quitting the Dock via Activity Monitor? (Or logging out/in?)
