itunes autoplay with iPhone 6s, iOS 11, earbuds

I have noticed, for the entire 10 months since I became an iPhone user that any time I plug in my earbuds iTunes starts playing music. It also does this after I have used an app that was using the earbuds. I am blowing through my battery at an outrageous rate because the phone is active with iTunes almost non stop. This isn't a car-related thing, I don't have the car configured to play iTunes.

How do I prevent this?

I just do not believe it should happen, nor do I believe I should need to charge my phone every 12 hours because it wants to go on low battery mode--I am not a heavy app user, nor wifi, etc.
