10.13.2 stability

Since updating to 10.13.2, I have experienced a rash of random, often fatal (meaning a hard reboot is required to recover), stability errors. There is no discernable pattern, but applications will randomly hang, giving the spinning beach ball and/or the 'Application Not Responding' error, with the only remedy being 'force quit'. Often, force quitting will close the app, but when reopened, the exact same behavior occurs - AND this 'application not responding' thing seems to 'leak' to other apps, as well, with the other apps experiencing the same hangs. When this happens, the only way to restore the system to a usable state is to reboot it - usually forcing it by powering down. There is no 'usual' app(s) that this happens to - it randomly occurs to any of the various apps that are open - the worst being Finder. When this happens to Finder, the only course of action is a reboot - the system locks itself up so well on these occurrences, nothing else can be done. After a forced shutdown/reboot, the system seems to realize there was a problem, as upon restart, I'm given the 'You seem to have restarted due to a problem' dialog box. However, this does to seem to generate any additional reporting activities. I have been (or at least tried to be) patient and use due diligence to wait a period of time to see if it recovers (up to 30 minutes), but I've yet to have it do so. Of course, the more often this occurs, the less patience I have for waiting. I believe the longest period I've been able to go without this issue raising it's head is about 72 hours,

The apps being affected are apps that I routinely use and with which I rarely had issues prior to the update - the beginning of this new issue can definitively be tied to the install date of the update.

Any ideas on how to address/effectively troubleshoot?

I am also having this issue. Finder will lock up while moving folders, copying, or even simply creating a new folder and trying to name it. Once finder locks up, other programs will one-by-one start freezing. After I try to relaunch Finder, it closes and does not allow me to reopen it. I am only left with the option of 'restarting' the computer.

I've noticed it's also not just Finder causing these issues. It has also happened when solely using other programs, which puts me into the same loop of the beachball/not responding message 'leaking' to all of my other programs.

Restarting does not even work. It takes me to a fake black screen and I am forced to do a hard shut off, by holding the power button, thenUser uploaded file turning the computer back on.

These problems happened all day yesterday, and are already starting today. How is anyone supposed to get any work done!?

Hello dechief4,

Thanks for asking the Apple Support Communities for help with your Mac. I am happy to check this out with you.

I first recommend seeing if the same issue occurs in safe mode and a test user. Safe mode will tell us if the issue is related to a startup item or plugins, and sometimes is all that is necessary to correct some problems.

When you boot to safe mode, log in to your account and check if the issue is also occurring in safe mode or not. Use this article for the steps to get into safe mode: Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac

If everything is working properly in safe mode, but then is not working after you restart the Mac, please check the section titled "If an issue doesn't happen in safe mode" for the next troubleshooting steps.

If the issue is also happening in safe mode, then move on to see if this problem occurs in an unmodified test administrator user account on your Mac. A test user will let us know if the issue is isolated to your account, or system wide. Please check this help article: How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac

After you are done testing, please check the section related to results, titled "If the issue happens in the other account" or "If the issue doesn't happen in the other account".

Thanks again and have a great rest of your day.

Have you tried downloading and then installing the Combo update it will reset some system files and caches and may help with your situation. macOS High Sierra 10.13.2 Combo Update

Or you could download and run this, http://etrecheck.com/ often recommended as a diagnostic tool, once downloaded run the app and then post the report back here, no personal information is disclosed in the report.

Jan 12, 2018 8:33 AM in response to dechief4

FWIW - I've resisted updating to be fairly sure the solution I chose worked. As far as I can tell, booting my iMac into safe mode, allowing the safe mode boot process to complete its tasks and then restarting normally has fixed the issues I was experiencing. To the other users who have posted similar problems, may I humbly suggest you, too, try this rather simple step to see if it provides any relief for you. YMMV

  1. Start your Mac
  2. Press and hold the Shift key
  3. The Apple logo should appear
  4. When the login window appears release the shift key and log in
  5. You may be required to log in twice if you have FileVault turned on

I ran etrecheck twice. One in Normal mode and once in Safe mode. Unfortunately, I'm not sure exactly what it is trying to tell me. Maybe you can figure it out ;-)...

I was finally able to start in Safe Mode (tried after another crash and had to actually start normally and then restart to get it into safe mode). As I write, I've not yet had a repeat of my original problem while in Safe mode, but as you know Safe Mode can be a bear to use, so it's hard to do an apples to apples comparison. I'll take a look at the section regarding 'What if it doesn't happen in safe mode' from the article above.

Thanks!

Hi,

we're facing similar problems on Mac OS Sierra and High Sierra recently. The whole computer freezes with beachball and any I/O operation (e.g. "ls" from a remote ssh session) blocks immediately for several minutes. It turned out that this issue was introduced (at least for us) by updating to Symantec End Point Protection v14 (v12 does not show this problem). Deactivating the software did not help. But uninstalling it completely from a client computer solved the issue. Of course, this cannot be the final solution, since it leaves the computer unprotected. However, you could give it a try, in case Symantec software is running on your systems as well. I'm really interested in any result!

Best regards,

Michael
