AirPort Time Capsule 802.11ac 5GHz radio keeps shutting down

Apple Airport Time Capsule has the 5GHz radio randomly shutting down (I have multiple devices connected on 5GHz) and not working again until a restart of the device is down via unplugging the power (restart via AirPort Utility does not work at all), then plugging it back in and then waiting around 20 minutes. The 2.4 GHz radio works just fine.

Anyone know if this is a known defect in the Apple Airport Time Capsule or how to fix this?

Based on your description of the issue, it appears that the 5 GHz radio on your Time Capsule is starting to fail.

At this point, you can try a "factory default" reset on the base station, and then, reconfigure it for your networking goals. If it continues to fail, you will need to replace the base station as there is no DIY fix.

If your Time Capsule is less than a year old you can have it replaced by Apple. Also, if you bought it with another Apple qualifying product, that would extend to three years.

Power supply / wireless radio problems are unfortunately not unusual on the AirPort Time Capsule, so if the device is less than a year old, have Apple replace it for you.

If the Time Capsule more is than a year old....and....you have Apple Care in effect on one of your Macs, the Time Capsule might be covered under the AppleCare umbrella for up to three years from its purchase date. Contact Apple Support for additional information.

If the Time Capsule is not covered, about all that you can realistically do is reset the device back to factory default settings and then set it up again to see if that will help.

A true do-it-yourself type of person might consider opening up the Time Capsule and then looking for a replacement power supply or main board on the Internet....but....having done this myself, it is not an easy task to open up the product....and....it is very easy to break a connector or tear a ribbon cable in the process, so you will need to use extreme care if you decide to try this.
