Getting messages from macOS about creating a new backup

Hi all.

I am getting this error message ' to improve reliablity, Time Machine must create a new backup for you'

I am starting to think that the hard disk on the time capsule is starting to fail. I have restarted the time capsule to see if there are any errors. But it boots up and everything is fine.

I am wanting to check the drive to see if there are any bad blocks but I don't know how to do this. did a Google search and can't find anything.

question I have, what is better a external hard disk to backup or still using time capsule?

I am tempted as well to have have 2 backups in case one fails and I can rely on the other.

My time capsule also backs up my MacBook as well.

Many thanks.

Mac mini, OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)

If this is the message that you are seeing.....

Time Machine has detected that your backup file is corrupted. When you click to Start New Backup, your old backups of the Mac will be erased and Time Machine will start all over again with a new backup and then move forward again.

Unfortunately, this is a common issue that countless numbers of users have experienced. There is not a fix, so you will likely see the same message appear again in the future.

It is not likely that the hard drive on your Time Capsule is failing, but if the product is 4-5 years old, it might be a good idea to go ahead the replace the product.

Good idea to have multiple backups if your data is important to you. Time Machine will work faster and more reliably if you connect a USB drive directly to your Mac. Other backup software.....like Carbon Copy Cloner....is highly recommended.
