iTunes wifi sync issue

There seems to be no rhyme or reason as to when this actually works. I have an iPad Air 2 and a 2011 MacBook Pro. They have previously been connected and the wi-fi sync set up. The wi-fi sync has worked before- it was last synced on Nov 30. But sometimes it seems like it takes an act of God to get this to work and it always revolves around whether or not my MBP shows "available" on my iPad under Settings>General>iTunes Wi-Fi Sync. The Sync Now button is greyed out, but when it is not and I tap on it, it begins the Sync but never actually syncs and my MBP IS available. Tried restarts, connect the iPad to the MBP, latest software loaded, etc... I have OS 10.13.2 and iOS 11.2.1. iTunes is 12.7.2.58 version. And....and, my sons each have an iPad Pro which both seem to appear in iTunes and sync no problem, but my iPad? Major hassle... Just don't understand it. Have tried halting the process AppleMobileDeviceHelper from the Activity Monitor, closing iTunes and restarting to no avail either....

Help!

MacBook Pro, macOS High Sierra (10.13), 2011 13", 1TB SSD, 16gb ram
