Intel Graphics HD 4000 issues after upgrade to High Sierra

I have a 13" MacBook Pro mid-2012 (MacBookPro9,2) with 16GB memory, and 1TB SSD, that I upgraded to High Sierra (10.13.2), and found that a couple of games I play are basically unplayable due to the refresh rate and jerkiness of the graphics. There were no problems with this laptop on Sierra (10.12.6), only after an upgrade to High Sierra. I went back to Sierra (restore from Time Machine) and the problem was again gone. Next I did a clean install of High Sierra and found the same issue again. I also have a 13" MacBook Pro 2010 and it has no problems with these same games on High Sierra. I've been in contact with a developer for one of the games (BZflag) and they believe the problem lies with the Intel Graphics HD 4000 on High Sierra (which would explain why there is no issue on the older 2010 MacBook Pro. As a final test, I had a 500GB SSD from another computer that I attached as an external USB3 drive, and did a clean install of Sierra on it and proved the graphics for BZflag were Smooth and working as expected. Then did an upgrade to High Sierra and the problem with the jerky and slow graphics returned.

Here's the EtreCheck output for this latest upgrade to High Sierra. I also have the EtreCheck output for when it was on Sierra if you want that too:

EtreCheck version: 3.4.6 (460)

At least three problems are evident from that report:

  • An unsupported memory configuration:

To learn how to install memory on a Mac, please refer to the Memory Upgrade Instructions in About This Mac > Memory or click the [Instructions] link in the report you posted.

  • An aftermarket SSD:

Apple does not support replacing a Mac's internal storage.

  • An apparently new battery, or an original battery that has not been exercised regularly:

If Apple or an authorized Apple repair facility did not install that battery, it might cause your Mac to perform poorly.

Unsupported hardware configurations will result in unexpected operation. The effects are often not immediately evident but arise upon macOS upgrades or updates.

Correct each of those issues by reverting your Mac to a supported configuration.
