iPhone 7 with 11.2.1. How do I tell Messenger to only look at contact list. It keeps looking at recents.

Every time I enter a name to send a message I get all the recent messages in group form with the name. I have to go to contacts then select the name and then select message. This is a PIA. Any ideas? Or how do I clear all recents?
