Cloning for new hard drive

I have a mid 2010 MBP with a full hard drive. I have ordered a larger one and a USB connector. I want to clone my current to the new then install it. I have read a how to that uses disk utility but it was for previous software. Would I need to have a jump drive with iOS installed on it too? Thanks

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

The basic way to do this would be the following:

  1. Place the new drive in a drive caddy or enclosure that will be connected directly to the MBP.
  2. Use Disk Utility or a dedicated cloning software, like Carbon Copy Cloner, to clone the older drive to the new one.
  3. Remove the old drive from the MBP, and replace it with the new one.

You now can use the old drive as you see fit. It could be used as a backup until your new drive works out or erase it and use it as an external drive. Outfits, like Other World Computing, sell complete drive replacement kits to make this a very easy process.
