MacBook heating up and folder with question mark flashing

Almost every time I leave my MacBook (early 2016) plugged in over night (I rarely do that) I find a flashing folder with a question mark on the screen and a overheated casing (not extremely hot, but uncofortably warm). The heat seems to be evenly distributed so it could be the battery heating up. The OS is from a clean install, initially, and I already tried an OS reinstall twice, but problem persists. A error report is generated my the OS each time. Any similar cases? Thoughts or solutions?

MacBook, macOS High Sierra (10.13.2), Early 2016, 1.2 GHz Intel Core m5

Thank you for the response. Actually it gets hot with NO usage overnight, simply when it’s left charging (plugged using the original charger and no dongles in between). Also, in a room that is quite cold - empty office at night). The flashing folder with a question mark (and a need for a restart) clearly indicates that there is some system error.
