Run OSX etc from external SSD

Hey,

I've looked into this so I know it can be done, I'd just like to know if it would be beneficial to do this on my new iMac. I've got the 2017 27" iMac, upgraded to 4.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 40 GB RAM etc, but only got the 2tb Fusion Drive. Kicking myself now for not going SSD. The computer runs great as it is, but i can feel the Fusion Drive is limiting it's potential.

Would it be worth getting a 500GB USB-C external SSD drive to run OSX and applications from?
Or is upgrading the internal hard drive possible?

Cheers!

iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2017), macOS Sierra (10.12.6), 40GB Ram

you can upgrade the internal hd but it will likely void your warranty

and will require some disassembly Can I upgrade the 2TB fusion drive on mid 2017 27 inch iMac - iMac 27" 2017 - iFixit
