While Sophos looks for viruses that don't exist, your Mac will have little time to do much of anything else.
Use the Remove Sophos Anti-Virus program. It will be installed in your Mac's Applications folder, unless you moved or deleted it. In that case, follow their uninstallation instructions here: https://community.sophos.com/kb/en-us/122710.
Beware that its uninstaller's effectiveness is poor, a typical characteristic of such junk.

Not strange at all. The highly publicized release of High Sierra with all its extensively tested beta versions apparently took its developers by surprise.
Uninstall sophos. Not only it is not protecting you from anything, it is hampering your system performance.
