Volume names in Sierra and High Sierra

With the more-recent macOS's such as Sierra and High Sierra, what restrictions are there on the number and types of characters that can be given to the names of volumes or partitions?

If my memory serves me correctly, prior to Sierra the number appeared to be no more than about 20, that including spaces between the characters.
