I am running 10.13.2, fully patched. Yesterday Airport Utility launched itself. I logged in to my Time Capsule, and then the red badge appeared (no red badge unless logged in; that is new behavior as compared to older versions of OS X). I let the TC update the firmware. This morning AU again launches itself. After logging in I discovered there was no firmware update waiting.
Why would AU launch itself out of the blue?
There is also an option in AU, when selected, that would make it launch in the event of an amber light.
Look in the AirPort Utility preferences. It can be set to automatically check for updates and problems.
I've got preferences checking for updates weekly. Does AU launch itself when checking? I had assumed that was in the background.
Have you installed the indicated updates?
Yes. I did that yesterday after AU launched and I logged in to my TC. That is when I saw the red badge, and initiated the update.

AU did not open on its own but this topic drew my attention to my partly hidden TC and there was a flashing amber light. Sure enough, firmware update available. Now updated - many thanks.
Thanks also for that. The TC has been behaving and I have rarely had to use AU.
