audio and video separation

When editing and clips are connected in the timeline, how do I delete a segment of video and audio without deleting the portion that I need. Example In other editing software I can mark in and out and just take out what I need but in final cut x if clips are connected it takes out what I marked and more.

Lots of ways. My preferred method (if i am understanding you correctly) is to use the Blade tool and chop before and after the section i want to keep, then delete what I dont want.

Another method is to drag the clip length from each end.

It is not completely clear what you are trying to do. As you were told already, you can blade or trim clips but I’m guessing you already know that.

If a clip B is connected to clip A and you delete A, then B is deleted also. That is to be expected. If you want to delete A but keep B then you can change the connection point of B.

Please clarify your question and later when I ‘m back at my mac I can try to answer more thoroughly and with some pictures.
