How do I get all mobile numbers from Contacts to show in Messages?

Recently switched from old iPhone with contacts synced to iCloud to a less old SE. Now “some” contacts are only showing email addresses in Messages when I type the name even though Contacts has a mobile number listed. Any ideas? The old phone does not have a SIM card and is powered off.
