How do I confirm my iphoneX is not locked

If your carrier told you it is unlocked, you need simply to put a sim from a different carrier in and see if it works.

Alternatively, you can contact Apple Support to learn what the activation policy on your phone is.

If you bought the sim free model directly from the Apple Store it is unlocked.

Look at the receipt... does it say you purchased an unlocked phone? What did you buy and from whom did you buy it? This is not usually something that one 'doesn't know' when one spends upwards of $1000 or something...

Unless you bought it directly from Apple it is not unlocked. If you did buy it directly from Apple and the receipt says "unlocked" or "SIM-Free" then it is. If you bought it from an individual insist on seeing the receipt showing it was purchased directly from Apple as unlocked.

Note that some stores sell what they claim is unlocked, but really isn't. In the US Best Buy is one store where it's salespeople lie. In the UK Carphone Warehouse is one. But to be safe buy ONLY directly from Apple, online or in an Apple store.
