Right click on the Logic app and select DUPLICATE. Then it is safe to update as you can go back to your previous version if you have issues,
Yes. Compressing works too. I hadn't thought of that. Either way, you have a backup plan.

Thats not the way I do it however, I right click, then select "compress Logic Pro X"
I can then unzip it at a later date, I have various logic versions on my computers.
does duplicate work in the same way?
Either way works perfectly well, just be sure to rename the duplicate(s) appropriately.
Be Sure to backup your current version of Logic Before updating
