how do i do back ups fast

I have to back up a macbook pro before upgrading. It hasn't been used regularly or backed up in over a year.

I've started to back up to my Airport Time Machine (357 GB) over wifi. Expected time is 17 days!! How can I shorten this time?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.5)

OK thank you. I did read the article and attempted to do as it instructed however there was another question asked after entering my password (Can’t remember exactly what it was .... something to do with -w??) Anyway I did what it also suggests, a restart and things started to move more quickly! Also did a update on the Airport TIme Capsule🙄. It’s now telling me that it’ll be completed in 5 hours!!!!

Thank you for your time and help. Much appreciated!

One quick way is to connect an ethernet cable, and edit the network Order to make Ethernet the Topmost interface in the network pane. Be sure all 8 conductors are present in the cable.

Once you do that, you can raise the priority of the Time Machine backup task, and it will take over your Mac completely, but finish sooner. Doing a restart will remove the temporary priority change, so everything will return to "as intended".
