Why do my notifications disappear?

Sometimes when I get a lot of notifications within a few days and don't get a chance to clear them in time, my notifications from a few days prior get lost. This is not due to me opening the lock screen as I can see them whenever I check my notifications before they are lost. This is very annoying as often I leave these notifications unread so that I can check them when I get a chance.
