AirDrop contacts only doesn't work between Macs

I have an iMac and a MacBook Pro both signed into the same iCloud account. In AirDrop, I can only see the other machine if I set the Allow me to be discovered option to Everyone. Contacts Only will not see each other. My iPad shows up with contacts only setting. I have not found any specific setting in Mac OS that restricts AirDrop. Is this a know issue?
