Apple Mail search of Gmail unreliable

Since moving to High Sierra, Search in Apple Mail is more unreliable. Was adequate before IMHO.

Now forced to login to Gmail on the web to search there if the search is critical.

Curious if others have found the same and if anyone found a solution.
