Music won't play on iPad

Some of the music that I imported from my iTunes account on my computer will not play on my iPad. The songs appear in the list but have a hyphenated circle in front of them and are greyed out. What is causing them to not play?

Thank you for your reply.

  • I do not see a disconnect icon in the upper right corner of iTunes.
  • The songs/albums are available in iTunes (I assume that this is the same as Apple Music).
  • I checked restrictions and there are none.
  • These same songs are on my iPhone and play just fine.

Hello dsimp256,

I understand that some songs that are on your iPad Pro have a hyphenated circle and are grayed out and wont play. I listen to music daily. I'll be happy to help. The following article has some information on this issue:

About iCloud Music Library icons and status

If your songs appear in light gray text

Your songs might appear in iTunes in light gray text for a variety of reasons. Those reasons include:

  • You're not connected to iCloud Music Library. If you see a Disconnected icon in the upper-right corner of iTunes, you're not connected to iCloud Music Library. Click the icon to reconnect.
  • The song isn't in Apple Music or isn't available in your current country or region. These songs also appear in gray if you search for them in Apple Music.
  • Restrictions are turned on for explicit tracks. Learn more about Restrictions.
  • An artist or content provider made changes or edits to an album. You might need to remove the album from your library and add it back from the Apple Music catalog.
Let me know if this helps.

Cheers!

Thank you for providing that additional information and screenshot, dsimp256. If you haven't already, please follow the steps listed below and then check to see if those songs no longer show as being grayed out.

If some of your songs are missing or the song names appear in gray text

If songs that you bought are missing or the song names appear in gray text, they might use digital rights management (DRM). You need to authorize your computer before you can play these songs.
After you authorize, choose File > Library > Update iCloud Music Library from the menu bar at the top of your computer screen or the top of the iTunes window.
If you synced the songs that appear with gray text to your iOS device from a Mac or PC, turn on iCloud Music Library on that computer and your library should update.

I followed the instructions that you sent me:

  • My computer was already authorized but I followed that steps anyway and confirmed
  • Update iCloud Music Library is not one of the choices from File>Library. Tried to send you a screen shot of that but menu disappears when I move my mouse to open Snipping Tool.
  • I followed the instructions to insure that iCloud Music Library is turned on, Settings>Music, then tap iCloud Music Library to turn it on but iCloud Music Library does not appear there.
  • I am not a subscriber of Apple Music. Might I assume that this is the reason that iCloud Music Library is not available from File>Music?
  • Most of the music that I have was not purchased from iTunes but I am able to play and all of it plays on my iPhone.

What am I missing?
