I solved this by reinstalling the OS and my data was not lost. I used recovery mode to install.
I have a macbook pro late 2011 witb seirra. I got an update installation notification. Clicked on update, mac restarts and update installation in progress suddenly it gives me prohibited sign on the screen. Now i have tried restarting it but getting same error. I dont have a back up of my files. It would be great to get a solution wherein I can save my files as well.

Try booting into recovery mode, command-r at startup when you hear the chime.
Then run Disk Utility and then First Aid on your Macintosh HD/OS drive.
Hi Thanks for your resopnse. I have tried that but problem is still there. What else i can try the data is very important and I dont want to loose it.
What have you tried?
Did booting to the recovery partition work?
Were you able to run First Aid but it didn't fix the problem?
