EtreCheck report

I wonder if anyone could have a look at my report and see if anything stands out.

Im not really having any problems apart from the hard drive getting low and also a slow startup.

Can anyone see anything that might be installed or running that should not be there.

Thanks for any feed back.

Pay attention to the warning about low available disk space and move files that are taking up a large portion of your disk to na external drive.

Movies, images and large music libraries usually take up the most room. You must realise that the mac needs at least 12-15GBs free to function normally as it is continually writing files to other parts of the disk as you use it and needs space do this if you leave it to get lower and lower it will more than likely lock up. 4GBs RAM is quite small if you can upgrade your RAM it is worth considering. You are also getting a warning about your battery health indicating it needs to be replaced. So a few things to think about, new mac perhaps!

Hi.

I have tried to follow the instructions for the removal of SIMBL but nothing comes up about it.

However, while I did copy /Library into the finder and go to folder, the Library did open, and amongst it was a zip file named Backup 6.1mb

I have tried to open this using the requested admin password etc but it just comes up with ..

Unable to expand backup.zip into downloads (error 1-operation not permitted)

I havent got a clue what this is.

Do you really use X11? XQuartz is installed. I have nothing against XQuartz, as I use it at work all the time. But it is loaded and thus using RAM. If it was a passing fancy and no longer used, you might consider uninstalling it.

Are you still using Steam for gaming, or was that one of your kids before they got their own systems? If you do not need it, then it too it taking up some of your RAM.

Also if Steam was being used by your kids, and is not longer necessary, it is possible there is a lot of storage being taking up by Steam games.

If you want to consider system hardware improvements, then Maximizing the RAM

<http://MacSales.com>

<http://Crucial.com>

are 2 well respected Mac RAM vendors

You might also consider replacing the rotating hard disk (or replace the DVD) with an SSD, which will give you a very nice boost in performance. <http://MacSales.com> has the parts and tools for replacing the hard disk or a Data Double kit for replacing the DVD with an SSD.

The current GIMP does not need X11. It now uses native macOS GUI elements

<https://www.gimp.org>

I use GIMP for my more complex editing tasks (not very often, in fact rarely, but I do use it). And it no longer needs X11.

Since you said you have GIMP, chances are if you have had it for a long time, it might have been the reason for installing XQuartz. So feel free to uninstall XQuartz.
