Currently running OS 10.6.8. Can't run anything later. Safari not working with many websites

I can't upgrade the OS on my Mac Mini so have to run an old version of Sierra. Many sites block this and it's becoming a real problem. Has anyone managed a work round of this? Would installing another browser help or is it too late?

The page link to information on El Capitan covers several supported Macs.

"Can your Mac use El Capitan?"

Mac mini models from early 2009 or later

[ Identify your Mac mini ] - Apple Support

You build is said to be supported; whether or not the Mac Mini has required

adequate existing updates to its hardware, is yet another matter entirely...

User uploaded file

.. Mac mini 3.1 specs - per mactracker.ca database app ..

So this first hurdle appears to have been cleared; cannot tell from here

if there are others ahead (such as hard drive capacity) and etc. You may

consider getting an externally enclosed hard drive, with its own power

adapter, to create a backup -or read up on Clone utilities- & make one.

That way you'd not have to leave any Snow Leopard 10..6.8 apps or

bits behind, if you make a full system clone on a supported external HD

and then test that (it should be able to start & run your Mac) before you

upgrade the internal drive to newer system; as that would be obliterated.

Shirtpocket SuperDuper clone utility is good with instructions on site; &

you may still find an older version CarbonCopyCloner from Bombich site.

{all my clones have a copy of the clone utility, so I can use it to re-clone.}

Hopefully you can get your Mac mini 3.1 squared away, and backed up first.

If you consider the age of the unit, you may choose to get a replacement HD

as they do wear out. An SSD would be good, if you set it up before installation.

There's good examples of upgrade parts & free instruction videos at owc mac.

Also iFixit guides may help you look into the situation ahead of inflicting damage.

In any event...

Good luck & happy trails! 🙂

My previous post 'timed-out' & so I was unable to

add this; an offline interruption hastened time loss.

{Snow Leopard (10.6) users can download v2.7.1, here.}

For a list of download versions of 'Carbon Copy Cloner' see:

{Unsupported older versions - Download CCC 3.5.7 for use on Snow Leopard

(10.6) and Lion (10.7)..}

Good luck in any event...! 🙂

Depending on the hardware build version, the upgrade to a later Mac OS X

is possible; perhaps not a latest version. IF your Mac still runs OS X 10.6.8

Snow Leopard, it may be able to run a later system.

You've not indicated what Mac Mini build model you have, so that remains

•How to download OS X El Capitan - Apple Support

This covers supported hardware builds by model year (introduction).

Other options may include a step above Snow Leopard to Lion 10.7.5;

that's seldom workable reason to buy ($19) app store download code.

El Capitan is a free upgrade, if your hardware is able to run it; and that

also means if it has a correct upgraded hardware (RAM memory and

enough HDD storage capacity for the system & new apps to run) your

older unspecified build model year Mac mini could see an OS upgrade.

In any event...

Good luck & happy computing! 🙂
