I have transferred my iPhone 6s to X and requested unlock for the 6s to give a family member. The instruction says to backup then erase content from the 6s. Will the back replace the current X state or is the iCloud Backup unique to each phone?

Once you've restored the backup onto the X, you can safely remove it from the 6S.

The backup is unique to each Apple ID.

They should be 2 separate backups.
