Anyone know the best way I can remove music from my iPhone 5s?

Anyone know the best way I can remove music from my iPhone 5s? I'd like to transfer all of my music to a separate device so it doesn't use up all of my phone storage. I tried to transfer everything to an iPod recently but found I would lose older files which I had loaded from CD's from years ago. So separating "purchased" from "non-purchased" is problematic. These are favorite oldies I love. Any help would be much appreciated.
