Wow - coming thick and fast now. I sleep with my phone next to me so I can see the time and to set an alarm if needed. I don't like having any of the radios transmitting or receiving while I sleep. These helpful suggestions appear to be missing the point. I don't actually care if you think I should use Do Not Disturb instead of Airplane mode. I am uncomfortable with the direction Apple have taken in removing functionality and choice in this area. No-one has explained why Apple have made this change and no-one has suggested an advantage.

Since you haven't seen it in the hundreds of posts explaining it or Apple's tech note on it (Use Bluetooth and Wi-Fi in Control Center with iOS 11 - Apple Support), I will. The Control Center buttons were repurposed to disconnect from the current network, but leave Wi-Fi on. This has several benefits:

  • If doesn't prevent you from turning off Wi-Fi if you really want to
  • Wi-Fi greatly improves the accuracy of location services
  • If a different network appears it will still connect to it
  • There's no chance of forgetting Wi-Fi is off, so you won't inadvertently leave it off and run up a large cellular data bill
  • There is really no reason to ever turn Wi-Fi off, except to disconnect from the current network.

I use it for that last one very frequently, and I've found this new way of managing Wi-Fi to be very useful. And I never turn off Wi-Fi for any other reason.

As there were 4 ways to turn off Wi-Fi previously, this was a good use of the button on the Control Center, as it leaves 3 other ways to turn off Wi-Fi. If you use any of them Wi-Fi will turn off and stay off. Yes, it really will. I've seen a few claims that it doesn't, but I have not been able to reproduce it on any of my 3 iOS devices, so either people are mistaken or their phones are very broken.

Previously I could choose to turn off WiFi and it would stay off until I chose to switch it back on. That is no longer the case.

WRONG. If you turn off Wi-Fi it stays off. I've tried it with 3 iOS devices, and if I turn off Wi-Fi in Settings it stays off. Dead off. I left it off for a week once, just to make sure. It was still off a week later, when I turned it back on. I have also done a test where I turned Wi-Fi off, then turned on Airplane mode. When I turned off Airplane mode Wi-Fi was still off.

If that is the case, then there is something really wrong with your phone and you need to schedule an appointment at your Apple Store Genius Bar for them to evaluate your phone. Plain and simple, if after turning Bluetooth off in Settings (not from Control Center) it is randomly turning back on without you turning it on, your phone is defective.

Yes It is difficult indeed... Many are not even aware that this doesn't turn their WiFi or Bluetooth off and they keep thinking how did it turn back on after 24 hours? It is annoying and very inconvenient. Makes no sense why would you just want to have a button to disconnect? Is it like a brake in the car??? Completely idiotic. We want it either On/ OFF ..

You can say Hey Siri, only if it works, it hardly listens to me after iOS 11. Secondly Hey Siri doesn't help in turning it back on.

Actually it makes a LOT of sense and Apple did this to accommodate the millions upon millions of people who have multiple Bluetooth devices and need to connect to multiple networks, which this precisely permits. And your assertion that going into Settings and turning Wifi off there is difficult is absurd. Once off in Settings (not control center) it stays off until you turn it on. So you want either on or off. TURN IT OFF OR ON. Just not from control center.

Oh good lord. If you are concerned about radiation, you should definitely NOT own a cell phone. The comment about radiation is laughable. I'm betting you never turn off your Cellular radio on your phone. If you are so concerned about radiation, you should immediately turn your cellular radio off and leave it off. Let me be clear, if you turned Cellular off and just kept Wifi and Bluetooth enabled, you could likely hold your cell phone to your head 24 hours a day and the amount of radiation would be so teeny tiny, it couldn't possibly cause you harm. Please don't spout nonsense as your defense of a feature you just don't like.

So, you're in essence saying because YOU don't need this, no one should have it. If I'm pedantic, you're being selfish. Also, it wasn't actually difficult for me before the new facility was added. I NEVER EVER EVER TURN OFF BLUETOOTH or WIFI. There's really no valid reason anyone ever really needs to do so.

Millions and millions, eh? Wow!

It looks like rbrylawski and Philly_Phan are both the same user. They are both posting similar, aggressive responses at similar times.

I came here seeking a reason behind the removal of the Control Centre functionality whereby WiFi and Bluetooth radios could be turned off via the Control Centre. Others came here with the same questions. We were met with needless aggression and disdain.

The reason is simple. There is absolutely no reason whatever to have two separate and different mechanisms to accomplish the same thing, especially when the Control Center could be used for more valuable functions.

I'm also missing the previous iOS 10 functionality of control center turning off BT - for me it's about security - "Bluejacking". Yes there are multiple ways to turn off BT - but those ways were there before - Apple took away functionality that was previously there. Yes, we will adapt. But to say that there is no reason to turn off BT or Wifi is a matter of opinion

I've yet to see one post or thread on these forums of an iPhone being Bluejacked. And from what I was able to read on this is if someone wants to Bluejack you, all they can do is send a message through the connected Bluetooth Device. Not exactly a significant risk. But again, Apple didn't take away functionality. It's still there. Just in a different location. I won't get into a discussion on whether you should or shouldn't turn Wifi or Bluetooth off as it really doesn't matter materially, since you still have the ability to do so.
