I have been unable to install a couple of third party apps on my iMac, while having no trouble doing so on my MacBook Air. Both are about 5 years old with the latest OS. Has anyone else had a similar issue?

No, if a third-party program doesn't work it's the fault of the developer for not making the software compatible. Apple only states their software works on Macs.
