Mac Os X - 10.11.6 won't accept latest security update on Mac Pro early 2008

Hi,

Strange as it might sound, I have got Mac Pro early 2008. It works well though I can't upgrade beyond 10.11.6. Just for now, I have got a routine security update that suckes my old friend. After restoring it from backup i tried it again, now with the combo file: osxupdcombo10.11.6.dmg and that's what i get: " OS X El Capitan Update can't be installed on this disk. This volume does not meet the requirements for this update." The volume was checked and was fine with "disk utility" and so does the backup disk (same notification)

Your profile says that you ave Sierra version 10.12.5 installed, is that true? You can get Sierra to install if you look hard.

If you are on El Capitan 10.11.6 go to About This Mac click System Report go to Software and click on Installations.

Now click on Install Date twice to see the most recent installs on your mac.

If the mac has installed the latest security update, Security Update 2017-004 OS X v10.11.6 El Capitan then you will no longer be able to install the 10.11.6 Combo update as it has not been updated to include the security update. This may be why you are getting the error message.

Thank you for your quick reply. Yes you are right, our new Mac Pro runs the Sierra but we are talking about my beloved "vintage". You were very precise with your diagnostic. Does it mean that it will no longer accept Apples security updates? Since it is still asking me to update to 2017-05, what got my computer stuck...

This is very interesting, my mac pro 2008 running El Capitan 10.11.6 installed the Security Update 2017-004

on the 14/11/2017, it was released on the 31/10/2017, now here comes the interesting part, Security Update 2017-005 was installed on my machine on 10/12/2017, so far a logical sequence of events. However the Security Update 2017-005 does not appear in Apple Support Downloads Latest page along with the other updates that were released on the 6/12/2017, Apple - Support - Downloads Digging a little deeper entering Security Update 2017 into the search field and when the page loads up go to the bottom and click Load More Results and then scroll down you will find Security Update 2017-005, click on it to get the information page and low and behold the post date is stated as 19/7/2017

which is incorrect and this may be the problem. Someone at Apple has perhaps set the wrong criteria in the embedded distribution file and that is why you are getting the refusal.

So for now I am downloading the security update 2017-005 again and see what my mac says when I try to install it, but for now I am puzzled why it has been labelled as 19/7/2017

So bang goes that theory, just downloaded the Security Update 2017-005 from here, Download Security Update 2017-005 (El Capitan) which has the wrong date, and it installed quite happily even though I had previously installed it last Sunday. So the problem must lie with you mac so could you post the report generated by running this app, http://etrecheck.com/ the gives snapshot of what is running on your mac and may help with diagnosis, no personal information is included in the report.

First off run Etrecheck again and go to the Clean Up section and click on Clean Up at the bottom of the section.

Next up you are running Avira anti-virus, macs do not need anti-virus and can be the cause of many performance woes. So uninstall it fully according to the developers instructions. Also macs do not need any apps that profess to improve performance or clean up your mac, the mac looks after itself. *********

There are an awful lot of Launch Agents and Daemons, do you really need all their associated apps to launch at startup.

You have an awful lot of Login Items, again is it really necessary for you to have all those apps to open when you start your mac. System Preferences> Users & Groups> Login Items, highlight the ones you don't need to start up and click the minus button. I see you have installed Western Digital software for use with your WD drive, macs do not need to have drive manufacturers software installed, so I would uninstall it.

So there is bit of slimming down to be done.

If you do all this then restart your mac, then go to Disk Utility run First Aid, if you have no errors try installing the update and see how you get on.

It is almost 10 years... a lot have gathered there, you know. I am going to follow your advice fully, yet it will take a while hence we are in a middle of our work, let you know ASAP
