I keep trying to update to the latest MacOS. The system restarts but does not upgrade. "Some updates could not be installed automatically." I tried downloading the full version and I get an error, "could not create a preboot volume for APFS install."

There are some problems in your report. First, please use the EtreCheck report to remove the adware that is installed on the system.
If you no longer use MS Windows on this computer either update or uninstall the version of VM Ware installed. Your version is years out of date!
Disconnect all peripherals (except the keyboard and mouse) and reset the SMC and PRAM per the directions in iMac SMC and PRAM reset .
Uninstall all antivirus and cleaning and ANY other third party maintenance apps. Not only are the 100% unnecessary they create more harm than they ever correct. I see you have CleanMyMac installed and also TechTools, perhaps other harmful apps. Locate the developers uninstall instructions for each of these apps and uninstall. Then restart in Safe Mode and then restart normally.
Do these things to start then attempt your update, if it updates then re-attach your peripherals.
BTW, you system really is a mess. It has a lot of very outdated apps installed, you should go through each of your third party apps and update them!!

When you get the error "some updates can't be done automatically" were you updating other apps too?
Have you tried just clicking "update" on just the HS update?
All my apps are up to date. All I wanted to do was update to 10.13.2. As I said, it keeps restarting and giving the same message to restart. So, I tried a fresh install which gave me the APFS error.
I did find an older report in the Community that suggests that I need to reformat the boot drive and start over. Clearly, I am not keen on that, rather hoping Apple has a fix. I figured I would post it here for a while then eventually visit the Apple Store.

I had the same problem with my hard drive, I was able to repair this from internet recovery mode (command, option, R), instead regular recovery mode. Then formatting the hard drive using “3-pass security option”. After that I recover the time machine backup and reinstall high sierra
I read elsewhere that that is what is needed to be done. Apparently there is a flaw in Sierra when it converted the drive. I was hoping for a short cut, i.e., short of reformatting and reloading. But given the problem, I guess that is what is in store. Thank you.

Reinstalled macOS High Sierra from App Store and is upgraded now.
I tried that and and I get an error, "could not create a preboot volume for APFS install."
Thank you for the ideas. I went thru all of that, even repaired the volume with disk utility. Same. Probably time to be sure I have a good back up an then visit the Apple Store.
Post a new EtreCheck report so we can re-look at the system after the changes you made.
I cannot upgrade from MacOS 10.13.1 to 10.13.2
