iMac 27 dual ssd/1TB configuration

I'm running an iMac late 2009, High Sierra 10.13.2, 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 16 gigs memory. Might it be possible to install an SSD drive internally to co-exist with the internal 1TB drive? I have in mind to clone my 1TB drive to the SSD, then use the 1TB for files.

I believe I can do this by sacrificing the DVD drive replacing it with a DVD caddy. Just wondering how feasible it might be to try to install an SSD somewhere internally, without sacrificing the DVD drive. Thoughts of others?

BTW, I currently have a 1TB laptop drive pasted to the face of my iMac, USB connection, letting Time Machine work with it.
