Are text messages automatically stored n the cloud when you have ios11.2 ? If so how can I double check prior to deleting everything from my iPhone?

If you are backing up to iCloud, your text messages are being backed up. There is no way to access a backup to ensure the text messages are included. From the article link below.

Text messages are deleted by the carrier's server usually within 60 days. I wouldn't bank on backing up sms/text messages to other servers.
Find a third party app instead that is reliable, localized (Will download the transcription of the text itself), and meets your needs. There should be some in the app store with reviews to assist
