computer freezes after a minute after startup

Question

computer freezes after a minute after startup

My iMac (2009) will boot up normally. But after about 1 minute, completely freezes. I can't run first aid because it freezes before I can get it loaded. I tried booting up in Safe Mode but the computer never makes it to the log in screen and turns off. I also tried rebooting with Option + Command + P + R, but same result, froze before I could do anything.

I just tried booting with CMD + R and ran disk utility. I was able to run disk repair and received no errors or issues.

Running out of ideas.

Thanks for the help. It won't connect to the internet which is weird. Also, after doing first aid on the HD, I received a "the volume could not be verified"

"File system check exit code 8"

"File System verify or repair failed"

Do you have a backup?

If not you might have to reinstall Mac OS X El Capitan again on top of it, don't erase the drive, just let it reinstall over it so it will preserve your files.

Yeah I recommend downloading El Capitan from the App Store on another machine if you can and created an installer USB and re-installing the OS on top again, don't erase the disk.
