Printer and scanner software for macOS High Sierra, Sierra, El Capitan, Yosemite, and Mavericks - Apple Support

"Your Mac automatically installs third-party software (drivers) for the following printers and scanners."

Canon LiDE 220 is on the list. I'm running fully updated Yosemite 10.10.5 (14F2511) which is covered by the linked support article. So it should work unless the support article is wrong.

I can see the "CanoScan" in the System Information view.

No scanner shows up to add under printers/scanners when I click the + button. (Only a network printer.)

I have tried several different USB cables to be sure it wasn't the cable.

I have rebooted the laptop to make sure it wasn't just a glitch.

I plugged in via a powered USB hub as well as directly into the laptop to make sure it wasn't a port or power issue (the scanner is bus powered).

I checked for updates in the AppStore after connecting the scanner and rebooting, but nothing there.

"Note: Refrain from installing the software that came with your scanner as it may be out of date. OS X and Software Update contain the most recent versions of scanner software. You will see future updates when they are made available via Software Update."

Of course for scanners that aren't supported by apple, you would have to install the manufacturer provided software.

I have had terrible experiences in the past with Canon's bundled software (autoruns when it shouldn't, pops up when it shouldn't, very difficult to uninstall, doesn't work as well as built in image capture, etc).

I intentionally bought this scanner because it was on Apple's supported device list and should work without installing any software. I want to be able to use it with built in image capture and compatible apps (e.g. PDFScanner) without any of the canon bloatware.

I would love help getting this working with drivers/software distributed by Apple via their OS and update mechanism or clarification that the linked Apple support page is wrong or misleading. I wouldn't consider responses telling me to upgrade from Yosemite or install Canon provided software helpful.

If you haven't done so already, try resetting the printing system. It affects scanners also.

OS X Mavericks: Reset the printing system
also Yosemite
